Beauty Product Fails

Last week I was having dinner with my friends Laura and Ginger, when Laura asked, “Why don’t you have any reviews for products you don’t like?” I thought about it for a second and said, “Well, I DO review products that I don’t like but lately, I’ve been doing a lot more with products I like. I find it more fun to write about products I love.” Later, I thought more about this and thought it would be a good time to do a “product fail” post with a collection of products that haven’t worked for me. Now, obviously this is just my opinion and these products may work great for you. That being said, I’ve been saving them up so there are a few. In Laura’s honor, here we go!!!

Em Cosmetics Dramatic Volume Mascara
This new mascara from Michelle Phan provides excellent volume but it smudged and flaked on me like crazy! I wore it for five days and never had a day that it didn’t start flaking almost immediately. Worse, I had smudges under my lower lashes within two hours and I didn’t even wear it on my lower lashes! Definitely a fail for me. There is a waterproof version of this mascara and I think I’m going to have to try that one.

Clinique Liquid Facial Soap (Mild)
This stuff was absolutely awful! My skin is not sensitive at all and after one use, it was tight and itchy.

Make Up For Ever HD Foundation
I love this brand but think this particular foundation is absolutely horrid for people with normal to dry skin. It clings on every dry bit of skin (even in the summer when my skin is more normal) and seems to find it even when I can’t see it with the naked eye. It also appears to magnify my pores like crazy and no matter what, I can’t make it look good.

Perfekt Skin Perfection Gel
This is a product that I wanted to love but it’s so not worth the money. If it was priced at about a quarter of the cost, I may have another opinion. The marketing hype is just ridiculous. It really amounts to nothing more than a silicone-y primer that doesn’t cover much and it’s also incredibly expensive for what you get. Not worth it in my opinion. I will finish my tube up, wearing it under foundation, but won’t purchase again.

IT Cosmetics Hello Brite Eyes Pencils
OK, I love this brand (my absolute Holy Grail concealer is their Bye Bye Under Eye) but these pencils make no sense to me. They are dry, they are not pigmented and if you can even get any on the skin around your eyes, it doesn’t last. I tried to find them on the It Cosmetics web site and they’re not there so maybe they’ve been discontinued. That is not a loss for me!!

Bobbi Brown Corrector and Creamy Concealer
These are two products where you’ll find that people either love them or hate them with not a lot going on in between. You already know where I fall on that spectrum. On me, they crease like crazy even when powdered (which is odd because my skin is dry and hardly anything creases on me) and last about two hours before disappearing. Even the makeup artists at my local Bobbi Brown counter tell me a lot of people find them problematic. If they work for you, great, but I’ve tried several of them and they are just a “no” for me.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Pink Rebellion (189)
Maybe I’m getting it wrong, but I thought this was supposed to be a dupe for the YSL Stains? This particular color has no pigment, no staining power and it lasts about 5 minutes. The marketing copy mentions how hydrating it is but I found it to be quite the opposite! Not sure if this is just a bad color or I got a bad batch or what but I’m less than impressed.

Two words: smudge city.
