A few weeks ago, I posted my favorite drugstore burgundy/plum lipsticks (click here to see the post). I’ve really been loving wearing those choices so I thought I’d also do a high end version of the same post. These lipsticks range from a sheer (ish) gloss from Nars to a deep, opaque, long-wearing lip tar by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. Read on for my choices!
Nars’s Rose Gitane Lip Gloss is a beautiful, sheer burgundy shiner that is the absolute easiest way to wear a dark gloss for fall. Its sheer texture is often the best choice for those of us over 40 because sometimes, a very dark, opaque lip can look aging. This depends on a lot of things such as the texture of the foundation, the amount of lines that we have around our lips, the strength of the eye makeup, etc. In any case, it’s a great, no risk way to wear the season’s favorite color! You can purchase Rose Gitane for $25 at Nordstrom by clicking here.
Clinique’s Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Raspberry Rush in Raspberry Rush has a light, shiny texture and reminds me of my favorite Revlon Lip Butters. This sheer, moisturizing sticks glides across the lips, imparting a rich dark berry color. It’s comfortable to wear and, like Rose Gitane, is a great way for over 40 ladies to get a deep lip color. Raspberry Rush is also available at Nordstrom and can be purchased for $15 by clicking here.
Part of Mac’s Luster line of lipsticks,Capricious is a beautiful soft burgundy that applies slightly sheer and has a shiny finish. Lips are left soft, smooth and wet looking. Another east to wear burgundy! Capricious is available for $15 here.
Mac’s Viva Glam IV is a plummy burgundy with a subtle gold highlights. Originally released in 2002, Viva Glam IV has been a favorite for years. It’s one of those “go to” formulas and colors that I come back to time after time. Besides looking great, all of the $15 cost goes to Mac’s Aids Fund. See it here at Nordstrom.
Craving by Mac has been on my lips quite a bit this fall. This Amplified Cream is so creamy and imparts a subtle shine. It is so beautiful!! I love how it goes with my autumn-pale skin and with the darker colors I’ve been wearing lately. Find it for $15 by clicking here.
Captive (another Mac lipstick) is very similar in color to Craving but it is slightly pinker. I wore this almost exclusively about fifteen years ago and I still love it! A Satin rather than an Amplified Cream, Captive is more pigmented and slightly matte. Lovely! See Captive here.
Mac’s Amorous is more purple than both Craving and Captive (and is also a satin). This one is a new purchase for me and I’ve enjoyed wearing it so far. Amorous is available for $15 and is part of Mac’s permanent line.
Gigolo, part of Guerlain’s Rouge G line is one of my favorite lipsticks of all time (I reviewed it here)! It’s a deep burgundy with lots of red tones and it’s just gorgeous! The formula is so luxurious with hyaluronic acid and mango butter. One of the most moisturizing lipsticks I own, it made my 10 High End Products Worth a Splurge! Yes, it’s the most expensive lipstick on the list at $49.50 but it’s so so good!
29 Cosmetics is a new brand to me that I discovered as part of a subscription box. Based in Napa, CA, this brand uses grapeseed extract as part of its anti aging line of cosmetics. Smokin Cab, a very deep burgundy red, is part of the Reserves lipstick line, which promises a super moisturized formula. This color is probably the deepest of the bunch and really perfect for fall. Use Smokin Cab with a clear lip pencil to keep the color from bleeding. I love the formula and this color in particular! Find it at the 29 Cosmetics site for $25.
Hourglass Empress Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick is a super pigmented matte lip color that lasts and lasts. Empress reminds me a lot of Captive but it is more pigmented and lasts longer. As with most of these long lasting formulas, Empress is a little bit drying but if you can deal with that, you’ll love this product! Empress is available at Sephora for $28.
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Lip Tars are true wonders to behold! They are incredibly long lasting (I regularly get 6 hours out of these colors) and very matte (they’ve recently come out with glossy versions as well). Strumpet is my choice here and it is the most pigmented and darkest color of the bunch. It is described as “seedless grape red” by OCC and I think that’s a good description. Despite its darkness, there is a decided purple tint that is perfect for fall. Available at Sephora for $18. |
